Back from time traveling to the past, Jolie Wilkins Queen of the Underworld is having a bit of a problem sorting through what are now her two realities. What she does know is that Sinjin, her sworn protector, went back into the past to protect her from the Lurker threat and may or may not have had designs on making her fall in love with him for his own selfish wants, either way he must face punishment, being stripped of his title and banished from the kingdom. When Jolie starts to become violently ill she starts to fear that it is another attack from the Lurkers, what she soon realizes is that morning sickness can make you feel like you are dying as well. Shortly after she finds out she is pregnant she is kidnapped by the Elder of the Lurkers. Will she make it out alive, even more importantly will she be able to protect her unborn child?

This is book five in the Jolie Wilkins series, but for me this is the first novel I have read. I thought surely I would be lost, but surprisingly I was able to stay right on top of the story line and it was fascinating. H.P. Mallory creates a world full of vampires, witches, werewolves, and even the Fae and her main character is the Queen of them all, but the author does not stop there she throws in the Lurkers. At the beginning of the book you have no idea who they are so I assume you have no idea who they are in the rest of the series, but as you continue reading they turn out to be a formidable foe for all of your usual “supernatural” characters. I definitely hope to go back and read the previous novels if this one is any comparison they are going to be worth the read.

Tales From Lovecraft Middle School Book One

Robert Arthur’s neighborhood has been redistricted so now Robert will be starting middle school at the new state of the art school Lovecraft Middle School. To add to his misfortune of starting a new school the one person he recognizes from elementary is his long time bully, Glenn, having to deal with Glenn after so many years may not be so bad, but when a cute girl comes up asks if you are ok, well for a teenage boy life just gets worse from there. But soon Robert will make one or two new friends depending on how you count the two headed rat he finds in the Attic above the library, and this is just the beginning of Robert’s adventures at Lovecraft Middle School.

Where do I start with this novel? Ok, how about the obvious, the cover. My favorite part of having the cover transform from a solemn looking man to a smiling red skinned yellow eyed “gargoyle” is not telling anyone about it. For example I was in the middle of moving from Germany back to the U.S. when I was trying to receive this book so I had it sent to my mother, I am on the phone with her right after she receives it and she is telling me she is going to open it. Well, there is no arguing with my mother, so the next thing I hear is “Oh, Shoot!” to which I calmly reply “Oh, you saw the cover?” Not only does the cover provide hours of fun but when you add onto this fact that the novel itself is full of twists and turns at every step, you start with an average kid trying to survive school add in a two headed rat and the fun is exponential. Then the book is rounded off by amazing illustrations making this a book that is truly fun for all ages.

Exiled by J.R. Wagner Advanced Review

James has been falsely accused of a murder he did not commit and exiled to The Never. Though James is the Anointed One, a powerful sorcerer who will bring about the end of the Epoch Terminus a war between the Faithful, those who believe in magic, and the Unfaithful, those who do not, in The Never James does not have any powers in this strange land where even the plants are dangerous. Along the way he meets a woman who shows him how to find water that makes him feel stronger and introduces him to her village where they have been awaiting him to save them all.

The main story line of this book is very interesting but it’s the secondary story line that became quite irritating. The Secondary story line is a mass of events that took place after James was discovered to be the Anointed One and mainly involves James’ mother the irritating part is that they have no flow to them for instance in one chapter his mother is visiting the seer and roughly a hundred pages later it is his mother and father on their way to the seer.  This notwithstanding it could definitely use a bit more editing there are several places where the he is confused with she and vice versa, this would not be so bad but when there are both male and female in the scene it makes it confusing. I would like to see what happens next, this book just ended abruptly I think to get the reader to check out the next book, all in all it’s not a terrible book the main story line is actually quite enthralling just be sure to pay attention to the dates on the secondary one!

I was considering which character to introduce you all to, which wasn't an easy task, as I'm trying not to give any of the story away, so I've decided to go with the character that ultimately kicked the story off. So, here's a little insight into the character of George Odessa.

Name: George Felix Odessa

Age: 47

Height: 6 feet

Hair Colour: Black with grey streaks

Eye Colour: Green

Where was George born?

George was born in London, England where he spent his childhood before moving to the US in his early twenties. He currently lives in Long Island, New York.

Does George have any children?

Yes. George has one son, Derkein Odessa, who is 27 years old.

What is George's occupation?

George is a millionaire architect. He has been an architect for almost twenty years. However, in 2008, he retired at the age of 42 and set off across the world in a bid to prove the existence of Arcadia and find an entrance into that world.

Does George have a love interest?

The love of George's life was his late wife, Catherine, Derkein's mother, who died of cancer in 2008. In his bid to save his wife, George left home to begin his quest to find Arcadia. While away from home, Catherine passed away, and he has never been able to forgive himself for not being there during her last moments.

What is George's most prized possession?

A talisman he found inside a cave in the Roncador Mountains in Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Now four years later he has been placed with a thief and murderer. Even though things may seem at their worst it is only the beginning of a set of events that will make all the hardships worth it. Charlie meets a set of people who will accompany him on a journey that will lead him to the center of the earth where he will find a magical world full of angels, demons, phoenixes, werewolves and even a ride on a Pegasus. Along the way his friends become his family and he learns the true meaning of destiny.

This was an absolutely riveting novel not only was it full of action and adventure but it was a heartwarming story of self-discovery and sometimes how we get to choose our families. Alecia Stone did an amazing job setting the scene and drawing us into the story, the world she created was thoroughly planned and executed so vividly you will have no problems imagining the perils her characters face. This is a one of a kind novel blending religion with mythology and introducing an idea that is surely original “The Garden of Eden is at the center of the Earth.” I can’t wait until we can follow Charlie on another adventure as he searches for the missing pieces of the Talisman of EL, and we can see what other powers it harnesses.
