Through flashbacks we are able to see precisely how the world becomes a nightmare full of monsters lurking around every corner, those who were once human and those who are still human but lost their humanity somewhere in the chaos.  

This novel starts off from the beginning as a harsh assessment of the monsters that human beings can become. This is a brutal story full of murder and unspeakable violence in a world that has been left ravaged; it is certainly not for the faint of heart. For the most part I liked this book, the flashbacks of how the world began to change was much more interesting to me then the “now” portion of the book until Zoe finally makes it to Greece and the author seems to open up and the post-apocalyptic world becomes even more enthralling than the downfall of mankind. The only problem I had with the book was the big bad villain was more annoying than anything else, but in the end it works into the story a bit better and you’re not rolling your eyes every time they show up. Plus with an ending like this one has chances are you’ll read book two regardless just to see what happens next.

Through the eyes of the survivors we are shown a world that has been drastically changed after the United States was wiped off the face of the Earth because of a natural disaster that is still sending shockwaves throughout the rest of the world. Eden is the beginning of the end in the year 2022.

There is no way to do this novel justice with a brief synopsis, first you have several unique characters each with their own story to tell, and then the story itself is multi-faceted with twists and turns that will leave you dying of anticipation of what will come next. This book is futuristic, with a touch of paranormal, and a dash of murder/mystery, and tons of action and adventure making certain to have something for everyone. What is great about this novel is though this book has so much going on the author manages to incorporate each action and reaction seamlessly into a cohesive and fascinating novel. This is certainly the beginning of the end and I cannot wait to find out what happens next.

David Girard has just inherited his old family home, though it is filled with nothing but awful memories he intends to “flip” it by making renovations and selling it for a profit. This is where Andi walks in, she is there to help fix it but as soon as she walks into the house she is assailed with haunting visions. Between the ghosts and the renovations Andi and David soon find themselves falling in love triggering a deadly curse.

So I know this is supposed to be a romance novel with all the steamy scenes included but for me the romance felt lacking, however the horror side of the book was absolutely amazing. At first the author seems to tease the readers with bits of the ghosts that reside in the mansion but then as the novel picks up speed it soon turns into and intense read. I am a sucker for ghosts, but the fact that Bryn Donovan combined romance and horror is so distinctive that the novel is worth reading just for this aspect. I have Bryn Donovan to thank for a sleepless night for one I couldn’t put the book down and two I was reading it late at night, by myself, in a house I have just recently moved into yeah I kept hearing noises and looking over my shoulder, so thanks for that. I did love this book even if the romance was a bit forced Bryn Donovan has a way with words brining to life some of the best scenes to make your heart rate speed up.

The Vampyrnomicon has finally been found and with it the origins of the vampires and with this Drake Matthews will be able to put an end to the vampire threat and once and for all rid the world of these monsters. Chiang Shih, the master of the vampires, is raising an army with her sights set on a vampire nation in Washington D.C. as the fight comes to a head, who will be the victor, the hunters or the hunted?

 

I thought that book two was really good this book puts it to shame; this is an amazing ending to a trilogy. From the beginning you are caught up into the story as once again the evil vampires are trying to take over the world and the Hunter are more determined than ever to put a stop to them. I absolutely loved how the relationships have evolved and with it will come the heartache of loss, as every war has its casualties. As we had in the second book which I really enjoyed is how the author also narrates the vampires’ side of the story. Though this book has many excellent qualities that are worth the read it also has a startling twist making this one of the best vampire books I have ever come across.

The Vampyrnomicon is a book that can be used to either destroy vampires or mankind, thus begins the race between the vampire hunters and master vampire Chiang Shih and her coven. The vampire hunters seem to be in the lead as one of their own can access the diary pages within the Smithsonian Institute that will hold the key to where the final destination is, but the vampires have a few tricks of their own up their sleeve.

 

A briefer synopsis: action, action, action, sexual encounter, action, action, action, epic ending. Oh yeah it is that intense from the beginning the novel jumps into the fighting and who doesn’t love it when the vampires are bad guys again? There is no redemption for these blood-sucking fiends, from the first page they are the monsters that used to haunt peoples nightmares not the modern day “will you save me” kind. I haven’t had the opportunity to read the first book in the trilogy, but this is ok, the author may have started right up where he left off with the first one but you barely notice all that matters is that you know vampires are bad and vampire hunters are good, from there you are golden. Although the vampires are the bad guys in this book the author encompasses their side of the story into the main plot making it hard to dislike them until they kill someone else who was completely innocent. This is definitely a fun book worth the read, but be warned it is an adult book with highly adult situations.

The Passage by Justin Cronin Review

This is the basis for project Noah, when a group of people stumble onto something that can cure any known disease and increase life. They begin testing right away soon using inmates on death row as subjects for the new drug they have created. But the unthinkable happens, leading to a nightmare that spans generations.

The main character in this novel is Amy Harper Bellafonte, not in the typical first person narration but she comes to life through many different characters point of view as the story progresses. Justin Cronin employs several different facets to writing in this one novel, I may be wrong but I do not think there is a single form of writing that he did not use including epistolary voice, using a series of letters or documents. Instead of confusing or leaving the reader feeling lost it actually makes the novel fascinating to read brining into focus much more of the story that you would usually get. My personal favorite was “Auntie” as she was the bridge to what happened after the virus and what is currently taking place in the story. This is one of those novels that will stay with you for the rest of your life not only for the amazing story but for the unique writing style. Though if you do not know there is a second book then the ending will suck, yes it’s that good. Hopefully I can pick up The Twelve, book two of the Passage series, because I am dying to find out what else Justin Cronin will bring to the table.

Jesse, Anna, Dave and Mini are all attending the Un Youth Ambassadors camp in New York, as they are on their way to see the 9/11 memorial their subway carriage is derailed by a massive explosion. The four teenagers from around the world are the only one to survive and soon crawl their way to the surface to find that all of New York City has suffered from a devastating attack. When they come across what appears to be survivors they are elated, but soon have their hopes diminished when the “survivors” soon turn on them chasing after them for their blood, for that one precious drink that will satiate their thirst.

 

James Phelan brings to life an all new form of monster in this novel; he combines aspects of zombies and vampires leaving us with a horrifying image. There is not a single aspect of this novel that I disliked, the characters are relatable thrown into a situation where they are trapped and absolutely “Alone” the monsters are terrifying yet you feel for the souls who have been turned into such monstrous creatures. The only thing I didn’t get was why a group of survivors would stay in a high rise, 30 Rock, when most skyscrapers are collapsing around them, though the setting is superb for this novel as it provides ample life sustaining items for the small group. Honestly though the best part of this novel is the ending, it is amazing with not one but two spectacular twists that definitely secure your interest in the rest of this series.

I am not a huge fan of zombie novels there have only been a couple so far that I actually enjoyed; most seem to be all about zombies taking over and less about an actual storyline. This take on the genre is absolutely fascinating taking into account the struggles America has been facing and twists it into something truly frightening as the war on Terror now has an all new meaning when the dead begin to come back to life after being injected with a new strain of prion disease. Since not much is known about Prion Disease it has seem to have become a favorite for zombie fiction, which is fine by me it adds an all too realistic take on life after death. Not only does Jonathan Maberry create a vivid novel that is sure to leave you with the heebie jeebies but he also incorporates a fascinating storyline between each of the taskforce members. He also creates members in the taskforce that are relatable and from a military spouse point of view absolutely realistic in the way that they interact with each other. I definitely recommend this novel, especially if you are just beginning to feel out the zombie genre.

Jason Teal dropped out in his last semester of college where he was studying to become an astrophysicist, to pursue his dream in the music industry. As the years go by his dream is still strong but he is no closer to fulfilling it, he works in an elevator where he plays his music for the patrons he must escort to and from their destinations. One day one of these patrons makes him an offer he cannot refuse, taking him down into the rabbit hole with one strange “test” after another until Jason’s entire reality has been altered.

Wow, this novel is completely intoxicating. We start off with Jason Teal hip hop deejay and music producer who seems to be obsessed with his brother’s work. His brother was famous for his street graffiti and in a way it sees Jason is trying to live up to his brother and when he fails he then becomes obsessed. This is only one of the story lines within this novel there is so much that happens and each test that Jason must endure weaves another stranger and mind altering scene then the previous one. What is remarkable about this is not just the series of events that take place but how the author takes you by the hand and makes sure you do not miss a single beat, if he didn’t this novel would surely fail but since he has it makes it thoroughly fascinating. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers this is a must read instead of this novel leaving you wondering “what the heck just happened” it leaves you exhaling audibly and a simple “Wow!”

Usually I like to write a synopsis for every story within an anthology, but in this case the novel is compiled of twenty short stories so my lazy bone kicked in and I figured I would just review the entirety. On the bright side however not reviewing each separate story means no spoiler alerts because you will still have to read the book to find out exactly what I mean.

Some of these stories are a hit while others are a miss, but when you have twenty stories and twenty authors, let’s face it that is to be expected. I want to start with my favorite story which was the re-telling of Wee Willie Winkie by Leigh Fallon, it is one of the shorter stories but by far the creepiest in the bunch. Most of the stories have a great aspect to them and they are certainly entertaining, some however where completely off the mark when it came to the Nursery Rhyme they were supposed to be re-telling not just incorporating them into their own story. The biggest problem I had with this novel was that I personally didn’t find it age appropriate, it is supposed to be a young adult novel but some of the stories are far too graphic. Now how I determine this is based on my family, I am very close to my sixteen year old sister, my thirteen year old niece, and my ten year old niece, so when reading a young adult novel I always think to myself one or all of them will love this novel or “There is no way in Hell I would let them read this!” In this case it was the latter, for instance I don’t find references to sexual abuse and rape to be appropriate for a young adult novel. I am twenty-something and I myself have a hard time swallowing anything that even alludes to such horrible acts. There are thankfully only two who add this into their stories so if you can skip those this would be a fantastic novel, otherwise reader discretion is advised.

The mirror twins, Julia and Valentina Poole, receive a letter from their mother’s twin sister whom they have never met notifying them that Elspeth has passed away and in her will she has left them everything on the stipulation that they live in her flat in London and their parents are to never set foot in the place.  Soon after they arrive in London they begin to experience strange occurrences in their new home.

Not only is this story about the mirror twins it also revolves around Robert, Elspeth’s longtime lover, who lives downstairs and becomes quite friendly with Valentina, and Martin whom lives upstairs and is agoraphobic and highly OCD whose wife has just left him after twenty plus years because she cannot live this way any longer.

This novel is actually really interesting, I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up this novel. I know Audrey Niffenegger is famous for composing The Time Traveler’s Wife, but I have yet to read that novel after seeing the movie I know the book is sure to make me cry so I have a tendency to skip them. I didn’t expect to be so wrapped up into the story from the very beginning, or should I say the end? This novel starts with Elspeth dying, and then it follows her ghost into the house and everything she experiences from her point of view, which I absolutely loved! The only problem I had with this novel was the ending so I cannot go into too much detail, but it began to drag on and on. I mean when you finish the main conclusion and the story keeps going for another fifty pages that feels a bit too much to wrap up your loose ends. I did enjoy the conclusions though, there were just so many useless details thrown in. Other than that this is an interesting read, highly unique with an intense look at the bounds between twins, though it is highly predictable still enjoyable.

After Misty Wimot’s husband attempts suicide and ends up in a coma her mother in law suggest she keep a diary for him, writing down all of the mundane things she can think of so that when he wakes up he will know what he has missed. Misty’s diary is full of anger at her husband as she finds messages he has sealed away in houses all over the island they live on, but soon her diary takes a dark twist as the islanders push her to paint again and once she does she soon winds up regretting her decision.

This is the first novel by Chuck Palahniuk I have read so I didn’t know quite what to expect. I wouldn’t exactly classify this as a horror novel but it is twisted and demented that there cannot be another genre so fitting. The novel starts off sarcastic and mean but when your husband calls you a fat cow in messages he has left before he tries to kill himself, well needless to say you’d be pissed off too. When you hear about a woman who is surviving such an incident you would think there is no way I can understand how that character feels, but the author manages to bring each character to life so vividly you completely sympathize feeling each emotion she feels and wanting to play her drinking game right along with her. But the best part of the novel is the ending; with a spectacular twist that is sure to leave you going “What the heck?” this author definitely saved the best for last. I had thought I figured it out and then Chuck Palahniuk came out of left field with such an amazing twist I can’t wait to read more of his work.

The Excorcist by William Peter Blatty Review

Ok so in case you have been living under a rock for the past forty years and have no idea what this novel is about, here is a brief synopsis. What begins with eerie noises and items being moved around turns into a mother’s worst nightmare when eleven year old Reagan soon begins to show signs of demonic possession.

It has been ages since I have seen the movie but I remember certain scenes that I am sure scarred many others as well as me. The book however is about ten times worse than the movie, it is scarier and more graphic than I had even thought possible. This is another novel I would highly recommend listening to the audio book, with narration by William Peter Blatty and Eliana Shaskan you are drawn thoroughly into the world Mr. Blatty created. I mean who tells a story better than the author himself? There are certain parts when the demonic voices will certainly send chills down your spine. If you haven’t read the book you definitely should, just be sure not to be eating I made that mistake during one of the more “graphic” scenes and I don’t recommend it!

What started as a parlor trick by his brother in law soon left Tom Wallace with abilities he never knew he possessed. The nightmares start with seeing a woman leaving Tom in a panic but then he begins to hear people’s thoughts around him as well.  As the woman becomes more persistent and his family is beginning to suffer he decides to put an end it to once and for all.

I am a huge fan of the movie Stir of Echoes, I actually had no idea it was based off of a book and as soon as I found out I had to read it. This is another one of those instances that Hollywood has taken several liberties with a novel, and in this case the novel was so much better than its counterpart. The story is highly in depth with twists and turns at every corner making this a remarkable read. One of the best features of this novel is the ending, I thought I had, had it all figured out and was even beginning to become bored with the novel when Richard Matheson came out of left field with an ending I would never have expected. Employing spooky ghosts and eerie dreams the author has created a fun horror novel.

She soon finds an add that takes her to a house that is best described as “Gone with the Wind meets the Munsters” and three new roommates each eccentric in their own way. Shortly after she moves in she discovers that Morganville is more than just the party town that it seems and is full of dark and dangerous secrets.

Ok so when I first heard about this novel I thought “Young adult romance called Morganville Vampires, another typical vampire romance, Skip it!” Once I started reading this novel it took me completely by surprise, not only is the vampires the bad guys in this book but it surrounds an entire town controlled by vampires and the humans know and most are under a vampire’s protection. After I read this I was hooked, I could not get enough of this novel with its witty repartee and a storyline like this it is an amazing read. Be forewarned this book has one heck of a cliffhanger so have book two ready to continue on!

Joaquin is the host of a popular occult orientated radio show where people call in to relay their bizarre stories. Joaquin has experienced his own share of life altering events that have lead him to opening the radio show as a forum for people who need to share and hopefully be able to come to terms with what has happened to them. Everything is going exceptionally well for Joaquin he has even been given a job to broadcast in the states for the first time, but soon the stories from his show aren’t just stories as strange events begin to bleed over into his everyday life.

The author did a great job with this novel it is strange and riddled with smaller scary stories that keep you immerged in the story. The main plot line is, well weird it leaves you wanting more and in the end when the true events come to light you are left feeling empty. It was a good ending for the novel but for me I wish it had been better there are so many directions the author could have gone with this one and I feel the one he chose fell flat. The rest of the novel is brilliant and thought provoking, the smaller stories are creepy and interesting, all in all it is a good book too bad you can’t skip the end.

Nine year old Trisha McFarland is hiking along listening to her mother and older brother bicker incessantly she begs for them to stop so she can use the restroom but they are so engrossed with their conversation they don’t even notice. Trisha decides to stop anyways thinking she will do her business and she will be able to catch up with them in no time and maybe, just maybe, they will notice her missing and it will give them something else to talk about. But Trisha can’t seem to find where they have gone off to; she can’t even find the trail she was on. Now Trisha is lost in the woods with only her Walkman to give her comfort as she tunes into baseball games and fantasizes that Tom Gordon is there with her protecting her. Soon, something begins to follow her, something sinister, will Trisha be able to find her way to safety or will whatever has taken notice of her end her misery once and for all?

With this novel it is hard to decipher what is illusion and what is truth as Trisha’s imagination starts to play tricks on her but so does something else, at times it gets confusing and most of the time I kept thinking “well that must be fake too” when it was actually something that was supposed to be physically happening. I think this is why the book was so interesting though that you couldn’t tell. I haven’t read much of Stephen King’s work, but this was spooky, not in the bump in the night sort of way, but putting aside that Trisha is nine how would anyone react to being lost for days in the woods. All in all it was an interesting story and a good read, Stephen King is a great writer and he was able to bring to life the deeper recesses of the human mind along with the supernatural.

Well for James Stark he survives, returning to earth after eleven years of being a gladiator fighting many different kinds of monsters and fallen angels, and now he is set on revenge. Stark will hunt down each of the people responsible, but he soon realizes there is a lot to learn in this new world as well as a lot more to his little group of friends than just sending him to hell.

This was an amazing novel, Stark is snarky and so hostile, but after eleven years in hell I think I would be too. The story itself is intriguing the author blends snippets of the past into the current day story so you’re able to appreciate the magnitude of loss that Stark faces when Alice is murdered. The world Richard Kadrey creates for Stark is purely original, if you are a hard core Christian and cannot appreciate that this is a fictitious novel you may want to skip it, Stark is neither for Heaven, Hell, or any other creatures that lie waiting in the dark he is purely for himself and the revenge that motivates him. This is definitely a fun read, though I don’t know how the author will ever be able to top this one but I look forward to seeing him try.

Richards is soon chosen for The Running Man, a reality TV show where everyone is hunting him for a prize. When nowhere is safe and you must survive to earn your prize what would you do to win?

I don’t remember watching this movie but I know if I were to ask my mother she would swear I have seen it, growing up with a Stephen King buff I probably have, but when I first started this book the first thing I thought was Jebus it’s the original Hunger Games, without children killing each other. Ben Richards is an average guy in hard times which makes him highly relatable, well unless you are a spoiled rich kid I guess, and he is just doing his best to support his family which adds into the story a sympathetic dimension. All in all it’s an interesting read; if you are a fan of the dystopian genre then you should definitely pick this one up if you haven’t read it already.

Eighteen Seventy-Nine, Reed Butler is grieving the loss of his wife and child when he is bitten by a vampire, but Reed Butler is chosen by God to put an end to the vampires once and for all. Along the way Reed Butler is joined by several different characters that will all play an integral part in the outcome.

This is an interesting take on the vampire/horror genre. I think it is the first Christian Fiction I have read that dips into the world of vampire and zombies, though I was a bit weary at first the author did a wonderful job using the right passages from the bible to intertwine with what he was writing making it a fun tie in.  The only problem I have with this book isn’t really a problem at all I just want more it was different and fun I cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next though I think this novel will be hard to top.
