Indie, Mainstream, or Both?

I have seen a lot of different opinions on the subject of Indie Books so I thought I would see what the people who read my blog think. Are you strictly a mainstream kind of person or are you a proud supporter of the self-published title? For reviewers, are you more lenient when it comes to indie books than mainstream ones or are you unbiased? For Indie Authors why did you decide to self-publish? Be sure to leave a comment below and let me know what you think!

As for me you can see from my blog that I review both Indie and Mainstream novels, I do tend to go a little easier on Indie books then I would with a mainstream title because a mainstream title has a different type of support system in place to make sure any kinds of mistakes are caught but I still give my honest opinion on whether I thought it was rubbish or not.

  1. As a reader- both, if something catches my eye and sounds good I want to read it. I will give a book an honest appraisal regardless of whether it's mainstream or not.
As an indie author I found it easier to self publish, rather than approaching many many publishers. However it is harder to market your work yourself rather than letting a publisher do it for you.

  2. Indie author here.

I decided to self-publish as it was easy and I could do it all myself. I didn't (and still don't in fact) know if it was something I was going to do longterm. It allowed me to put a short book out for free and test the waters.

I don't really think reviewers should treat us any differently. It's tempting for me to wave the 'but I am an indie!' flag whenever someone criticises something of mine, but ultimately if I am charging people money for something then it is unreasonable for me to expect leniency.

  3. Lol I think I should clarify something. I Have OCD and one typo will ruin a book for me and I will obsess over it for at least an hour, so when I say I am more lenient it's only because I know Indie authors don't have several editors to make sure none of those annoying typos slip past.

  4. I prefer indie to be honest! I'm an Indie junkie and I love being one of the first people to read a book that isn't well known so I can tell everyone about it. It's just fun for me when I can find something different than the mainstream books everyone has read.

Right now I'm only reading Indie books and I'm loving it!
